Dr. Christopher J. Kane is a specialist in prostate cancer and renal cell carcinoma and is internationally recognized for his expertise in robot-assisted and other minimally invasive procedures for urologic surgery. He joined UCSD as Professor of Surgery and Chief of Urology in September 2007. He is also Program Director of the UCSD Urology Residency Training Program. Dr. Kane has recently been selected as one of San Diego's Top Doctors in 2009 by the San Diego County Medical Society, in partnership with San Diego Magazine.
Dr. Kane came to UCSD Urology from the University of California, San Francisco, where he was Professor in Residence and Vice Chair of the Urology Department, Assistant Residency Program Director, and Chief of Urology at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco. Before his tenure at UCSF, he was Assistant Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Director of the Urology Residency Training Program at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego.
Dr. Kane received his MD from the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences, served his surgical internship and residency at the Oakland Naval Medical Center and the UC Davis East Bay Combined Program, and completed his residency in urology at UCSF and the Oakland Naval Medical Center.
Dr. Kane has published more than145 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 125 scientific abstracts and invited commentaries. He contributes extensively to the medical and general communities as a presenter and educator.
As a military officer and surgeon, Dr. Kane served in the medical corps in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. His numerous military honors include the Navy Commendation Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
